Google to Open Its First Retail Stores in India as Part of Global Expansion

New Delhi: Google is preparing to open its first-ever retail stores in India, marking a significant move in its worldwide expansion. The company is reportedly finalizing prime locations in New Delhi and Mumbai, according to insiders familiar with the plans.

Strategic Entry into India’s Retail Scene

India has become a vital market for Google, with growing demand for its range of hardware, such as Pixel smartphones, smartwatches, and earbuds. While the company has previously relied on third-party resellers and online channels, it now plans to directly tap into the Indian retail space, following Apple’s successful model of establishing dedicated stores to showcase premium products.

Currently, Google operates just five retail locations, all situated in the United States. Expanding into India underscores the company’s efforts to capitalize on the country’s vast smartphone market, which boasts over 700 million users.

Store Locations and Launch Plans

Industry sources suggest that Google is nearing a decision on where to set up its new stores, with Gurugram, a key business district near Delhi, being a likely candidate. Mumbai, India’s economic powerhouse, is also being considered a prime location for one of the stores.

The retail outlets are expected to cover around 15,000 square feet, and their launch is anticipated within the next six months, though the timeline could be subject to regulatory approvals and operational factors.

Competing with Apple in India’s Premium Market

Google’s move to establish a retail presence in India comes nearly two years after Apple launched its flagship stores in Delhi and Mumbai. While Apple dominates India’s premium smartphone sector, Google seeks to capture market share by offering a unique, immersive retail experience, showcasing its Pixel series and other tech products.

In India, Pixel smartphones are priced between $370 and $2,000, putting them in direct competition with Apple’s iPhones, which range from $520 to $2,130. Google has also taken steps to manufacture its Pixel devices locally in line with the Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative.

Navigating Regulatory and Business Challenges

Despite its aggressive retail expansion, Google faces challenges in India, particularly around regulatory concerns. The company is currently involved in antitrust cases related to its in-app billing practices and alleged monopolistic behavior in the smart TV market. Moreover, Google’s head of public policy in India recently resigned, marking the second high-profile exit in just two years, raising concerns about the company’s regulatory approach.
