However, the spiritual fervor was accompanied by unfortunate incidents, including tragic stampedes and viral moments that captured public attention.
Record-Breaking Participation
Beginning on January 13, Maha Kumbh 2025 drew millions of pilgrims, saints, and tourists from across the globe. Official estimates indicate that over 66 crore devotees participated in the sacred ritual baths at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. Grand processions led by various Hindu monastic groups, or ‘Akharas,’ showcased vibrant cultural and spiritual traditions, with saffron-clad monks and ash-smeared Naga sadhus taking the revered ‘Shahi Snan’ (royal bath). The sheer scale of participation underscored the event’s global significance.
Social Media Sensations: Monalisa and IIT Baba
Beyond religious devotion, Maha Kumbh 2025 saw unexpected viral fame for ordinary individuals. Among them was 16-year-old Monalisa Bhosle from Madhya Pradesh, a garland seller whose captivating presence turned her into an overnight social media sensation. Crowds gathered around her for selfies, and rumors surfaced about her earning ₹10 crore in just ten days, though she later denied these claims. Her newfound fame even led to film industry offers.
Another widely discussed figure was Abhey Singh, known as ‘IIT Baba.’ A former aerospace engineer from IIT Bombay, he embraced a life of renunciation and spirituality. Multiple fire accidents were reported throughout the event. On January 19, a cylinder explosion in Sector 19 led to a large-scale fire, destroying several camps, though no casualties were reported. Another fire on January 25 saw two cars catch fire due to an electrical short circuit in Sector 2, causing panic but resulting in no injuries.
Political Controversies and Water Quality Concerns
The event also witnessed political disputes, with opposition leaders criticizing the Uttar Pradesh government for alleged mismanagement, especially in the wake of the January 29 stampede. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee referred to the gathering as ‘Mrityu Kumbh’ (Death Kumbh), while other political figures accused the administration of downplaying casualty numbers.
Water quality at the Sangam was another contentious issue. Reports suggested elevated levels of faecal bacteria and total coliform, raising concerns about the safety of the river for bathing. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that water quality at various locations did not meet primary bathing standards.
