Microsoft to Discontinue Skype in May 2025, Focus Shifts to Teams

New Delhi: Microsoft has announced that it will discontinue Skype in May 2025, marking the end of its 20-year run. The decision is part of the company’s strategy to streamline communication services and enhance its focus on Microsoft Teams.

Why Is Microsoft Shutting Down Skype?

Since its launch in 2003, Skype has been a pioneer in online communication, providing affordable voice and video call services. However, with increasing competition from platforms like Zoom and Slack, Skype has struggled to maintain its relevance, particularly in the smartphone era.

Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion but has gradually shifted its focus to Teams, integrating it with Office applications to cater to business users.

What’s Next for Skype Users?

Skype users can transition to Microsoft Teams at no cost using their existing login credentials. Additionally, contacts and chat histories will be automatically transferred to Teams to ensure a seamless migration.
